Barbie was my first articulate, expensive doll... I had a fascination about her, so perfect, so pale, with her flawless smile and perfect wasp wait. Maybe that is why i'm posting this... I came across this series by South African, self-taught photographer and artist Mariel Clayton, who describes herself as a ‘doll photographer with a subversive sense of humor’.
In her Bad Barbie series she used the famous doll and Japanese miniatures as her primary medium and subject. Mariel created 3 dimensional, miniature staged scenery full of details and black humor, criticizing contemporary society and its stereotypes.
Barbie gone bad is inspired by current events, pop culture, music and even paper. A meaningful, thought-provoking body of work to be used as a conduit for interpretation by the viewer.
With Bad Barbie, Mariel states that it's the viewer's response and the thought process that leads to it, that are the most important. At the very least, ... it's nothing more than an excuse for a good laugh... see full series at 5 Pieces Gallery.
