The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has reported that the Plainridge Park, MGM Springfield and Encore Boston Harbor casinos made around $92m in gross gaming revenue (GGR) for August.

Individually, the Encore Boston Harbor reported $58m in revenue, MGM Springfield is responsible for $22m, while the Plainridge Park Casino took in $12m.

Of the $92m in total GGR, around $25m has been collected in taxes by the state.

In comparison with last year, the state saw a 0.4% drop in GGR – however, it is expected that this figure will be different in 2023, following the legalisation of sports betting.

Massachusetts became the latest US state to legalise sports betting, following a last-minute vote by the State Congress and Senate, shortly before the bodies broke for summer recess.

The decision to allow sports betting has been well received by the casinos in the state, with the MGM Springfield already building a bank of televisions for its retail sportsbook section. According to the new sports betting legislation, retail sportsbooks in Massachusetts will be subject to 15% tax rates, while online will have an increased rate of 20%.

Upon the announcement of the agreement, Speaker Ron Mariano tweeted: “I am proud to announce that the Sports Betting Conference Committee has reached an agreement on legislation that will legalise wagering on professional and collegiate sports in Massachusetts, bringing the immense economic benefits of a legal sports betting industry to MA.”
